The newest TOP500 List--the ranking of the world’s most powerful supercomputers--dropped today, and two things are clear: graphics processing units are increasingly augmenting the power of the world’s most sophisticated supercomputers, and China is adding computing strength at an ambitious rate. Ten years ago China had just three computers that made the TOP500. It now has 73 on the list, including the second-fastest computer in the world in its Tianhe-1A supercomputer.

Jaguar - The New Supercomputer

Retaining its place at the front of the pack is Japan’s K Computer, which lives at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Sciences. Tianhe-1A is second, while America’s fastest supercomputer (and former number one), Oak Ridge National Labs’ Jaguar, keeps the number three spot. In fact, the top 10 wasn’t shaken up at all since the last TOP500 list dropped in June. But that won’t last.

ORNL’s Jaguar is currently undergoing an upgrade that should lift it to 10 to 20 petaflops late next year or early in 2013, which--all other things remaining equal--will push it past both Tinahe-1A and K to become the fastest computer in the world once more. The upgrade will bestow upon Jaguar a new name--Titan--as well as an emerging kind of technological edge in the form of graphics processing units, or GPUs.

We’ve been writing a lot about the incorporation of GPUs into supercomputing here lately, mostly because they are a relatively cheap and simple means of boosting the speed of conventional processors by adding a parallel computing aspect that can juggle more than one task simultaneously. Where a traditional CPU can have up to 16 computing cores, a GPU can have hundreds. That means that for certain kinds of calculations a GPU can divide and conquer in ways that CPUs cannot, pushing GPU-augmented systems to blistering speeds.

GPUs as supercomputer accelerators have really only been around for a few years, but according to the team over at NVIDIA they have now found their way into 35 systems on the TOP500, three of which are in the top 5. At the beginning of last year, there were less than 10 systems taking advantage of GPU acceleration. As the world’s biggest computers continue to incorporate them, we will likely see more existing systems take big leaps forward in terms of speed--and perhaps see more volatility at the top of the list.

Artificial blood may become a common reality, thanks to the first successful transfusion of lab-grown blood into a human. Luc Douay, of Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris, extracted hematopoietic stem cells from a volunteer's bone marrow, and encouraged these cells to grow into red blood cells with a cocktail of growth factors. Douay's team labeled these cultured cells for tracing, and injected 10 billion of them (equalling 2 milliliters of blood) back into the marrow donor's body.

After five days, 94 to 100 percent of the blood cells remained circulating in the body. After 26 days, 41 to 63 percent remained, which is a normal survival rate for naturally produced blood cells. The cells functioned just like normal blood cells, effectively carrying oxygen around the body. "He showed that these cells do not have two tails or three horns and survive normally in the body," said Anna Rita Migliaccio of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

This is great news for international health care. "The results show promise that an unlimited blood reserve is within reach," says Douay. The world is in dire need of a blood reserve, even with the rising donor numbers in the developed world. This need is even higher in parts of the world with high HIV infection rates, which have even lower reserves of donor-worthy blood.

Other attempts to synthesize blood have focused on creating an artificial blood substitute, rather than growing natural blood with artificial means. For example, Chris Cooper of the University of Essex in Colchester, UK, is working on a hemoglobin-based blood substitute that is less toxic than the protein in its unbound state. Artificial blood substitutes present a solution for transfusions after natural disasters and in remote areas. The artificial substitutes do not require refrigeration, unlike fresh and stem cell-grown blood.

The stem cell method has its own pros, though. "The advantage of stem cell technology is that the product will much more closely resemble a red cell transfusion, alleviating some of the safety concerns that continue around the use of the current generations of artificial products," says Cooper.

While Douay's results, published in the medical journal Blood, are a major step forward, mass-produced artificial blood is still a long way away. A patient in need of a blood transfusion would require 200 times the 10 billion cells that Douay and his colleagues used in the test. Robert Lanza, one of the first people to grow red blood cells in a lab on a large scale, suggests using embryonic stem cells, which could generate 10 times the amount grown by Douay.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is a pretty phone,As much as I like this phone, super good looking. Once a Nokia WP7 LTE comes out on AT&T people are going to flock to AT&T. However, it does lack a front camera and a screen size of 4 inches or better. Every phone has that, and many developers have apps that rely on 2 cameras and a bigger screen. Add a front camera, bigger screen and more than 512MB ram and Nokia will convert iPhone and android users. Windows Phone 7 has work to do as well, but they are on to something special and fresh in the world of smartphones.

I love this hardware. There's something about the weight, size, finish, and balance that just feels right. It's distinctive but still tasteful, made of some kind of polycarbonate that feels somehow metallic, with curved sides and a 3.7-inch screen, the glass covering of which curves with them. It's all made from one piece of the metallic-feeling plastic, and it's the same color the whole way through, so if you scratch the phone, you won't get a streak of white. The phone is ever so slightly thicker than the iPhone, a millimeter or two at most, so it still feels very sleek in the hand.

Yesterday at an event in New York, Barnes & Noble's CEO showed off the company's new tablet: the Nook Tablet. Barnes & Noble's New Nook Tablet - Great Impressions and Simple Touch Ebook Reader. The name signals a change--this isn't an ebook reader with a color screen, but a full-on tablet. Yes, it's very much like the Kindle Fire, but then, the Kindle Fire is very much like the Nook Tablet's predecessor, the Nook Color. Updated with impressions.

The Nook Tablet looks mostly like the previous Nook tablet: a 7-inch Android-based tablet, focused on media (especially books), with essentially the same design, including that distinctive little loophole in the lower left corner. It's gotten a bump in some of the internals; it now has a dual-core 1GHz processor and a full 1GB of memory, as well as improved battery life and a new display.

The Kindle Fire is pretty clearly the direct competition: both are 7-inch, very inexpensive (compared to larger tablets like the iPad and Android Honeycomb tablets) based on Android but heavily modified. These tablets are technically Android tablets, but they don't look like Android, and neither offers access to the Android Market for apps. (The Kindle Fire has access to the Amazon App Store, a sort of alternate Android Market--no word on how you get apps on the Nook Tablet.) Both are focused on reading and media consumption, rather than the do-it-all near-computer-replacement of the iPad.

Nook Tablet reviews: Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble was pretty eager to talk about how their tablet is better than the Kindle Fire, which is understandable, since they're so alike. The company points to those internals: a better screen, more storage, more memory. It still loses out on price; the Nook Tablet will cost $250 when it goes on sale later this month, compared to the Kindle Fire's $200. But Barnes & Noble also reduced the price of the Nook Color to $200 to compete with the Fire.

The company also improved their Nook SimpleTouch e-ink reader, adding a sharper screen and longer battery life (B&N claims up to two months, which is pretty impressive--longer than the new e-ink Kindles). And, as is the trend, they cut the price of the SimpleTouch from $140 down to $100.

The Nook Tablet can be pre-ordered today, and should be available sometime "late next week."

Update: I got a look at the Nook Tablet shortly after the event. My immediate thought upon seeing the Tablet is that the screen is worth all of the silly accolades ("VividView"?) heaped on it during the presentation--this screen is ridiculously crisp and bright. The resolution isn't high enough to actually display 1080p content, which makes the claims that it can play 1080p content sort of snake oily, but that's not to take away from the quality of this thing. Videos looked just fantastic, as did text.

Navigation seemed, to be honest, a bit stuttery. It's not unusable, and does seem faster than the original Nook Color, as befitting its new processor, but it's not nearly as buttery smooth as the iPad. Panning through a complex, Flash-laden site like CNN, for example, was pretty jittery. The UI is pretty easy to use, and true to form does not look much like Android at all.

If you have been convinced for years that John Madden was replaced with an iPod full of soccer generic comments, which may be pleased to know that the Swiss Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne has worked on an even more advanced. It is equipped with artificial intelligence, so that you can actually see what is happening on the ground and provide feedback.

The school, which from now on called EPFL, came with a complex algorithm that uses several different video sources, continuous monitoring to follow a football, basketball or football game the same way one commentator human could. It divides the field into a grid, and track individual players based on uniform color, number, and other clues, predicting the probability of entry of each player in each section of the network.

The next step is to feed all this data in a program that is able to synthesize the data and create comment. Currently, the system is intended to be used by coaches to analyze teamwork from a broad point of view, but I personally love to see a commentator on robotics. Maybe you can become friends with the robotic future journalists?

Its rivals include the Panasonic GF3 and Sony NEX-C3.

The overall design of this camera differs to other cameras in the PEN line-up, since manual exposure overrides are largely tucked away into the menu system, providing a user experience particularly suited to pointing and shooting.

This doesn't mean manual overrides aren't possible, though, and a comprehensive range of creative exposure modes are provided.

Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 Features

At the heart of the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1 lies a 12.3MP Live MOS sensor with a sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 12800, which should be perfect for low-light conditions. A new image processing engine, introduced in all three recently released Olympus PEN cameras, promises to keep noise levels low, even at high sensitivity settings, as well as aiding processing speed and video quality.

The low weight of 265g with a battery and memory card installed, and a slim profile, should aid portability.

Olympus has devised a 35-point autofocus (AF) system that was the fastest to obtain focus among its peers, when tested in June 2011. AF certainly seems very snappy, and accurate enough for use with wide aperture lenses. One of the major benefits of a compact system camera is that the lens can be swapped over to suit the application. The Micro Four-Thirds system has one of the largest range of compatible lenses on offer of any compact system camera.

With ease of use being the main ethos behind the Olympus PEN Mini E-PM1's design, a reduced selection of buttons is provided, enabling access to the most commonly used functions, such as video recording, exposure compensation, flash, drive and focusing modes.

Everything else is tucked away into one of the simply laid-out menus. Common overrides can be easily accessed by pressing the OK button and other settings via the menu button. This design approach will certainly suit snap shooters well, who may rarely override the camera's automatic exposure, but may take a little getting used to if you're more at home with manual exposure control.

A live guide feature has also been included, which explains each function in the menu as it is selected.

A 3-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 460,000 dots provides the view for composing images and videos. The screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9, which is great for recording wide-screen videos, but not so great for taking images in the standard 4:3 aspect ratio. Much of the screen is wasted and black bars fill either side of the screen.

A highly reflective acrylic cover protects the screen. Unfortunately because it's so reflective, it also makes the screen difficult to see clearly in bright conditions. Since the electronic viewfinder is optional, this could be a major issue for some. The screen is incredibly difficult to see with the sun behind you, and guesswork may even become the last resort when composing shots when the screen can't be shaded easily.

Under more favourable conditions the screen is bright and clear and the menus easy to navigate, with pleasing animated flourishes as you select various items.

A decent selection of scene program modes and custom art effect filters are provided, which offer a one-touch fix for more creative-looking effects.

The art filter menu includes effects to reproduce various popular looks, including Soft Focus, Pop Art, Grainy Monochrome Film, Pin Hole Camera, Dramatic Tone and a Diorama effect, which reproduces the shallow depth of field effect of a tilt-shift lens. There are five different manettino positions and conditions: Low Grip, Sport, Race, CT and CTS. The emphasis is on comfort and stability without compromising the handling. Sport is the best setting for day to day driving and guarantees great safety under good grip. Race is particularly suitable for track driving providing maximum performance and stability in optimal grip situations. CT helps the driver improving his driving skills in safety, by keeping active the stability control. It allows over-steer right to the edge of the car’s limits and guarantees enhanced driving pleasure and fun behind the wheel, particularly on the track.
